Ela kizhi, also known as Patra Pinda Sweda, is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves the use of medicinal leaves and herbs. These herbs are carefully selected, chopped, and sautéed in warm herbal oils, then wrapped in cotton cloth to form therapeutic poultices (kizhi). The poultices are then used to massage the body in specific strokes. This treatment is often recommended for musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, and chronic joint pain.
Ela kizhi provides multiple benefits to the body and mind. It helps relieve muscle stiffness, reduces inflammation, and alleviates joint pain. Circulation is stimulated, toxins are flushed out, and the body feels rejuvenated. The warmth from the herbal poultices penetrates deep into the tissues, promoting flexibility and reducing chronic aches. Many clients report improved mobility, better sleep, and a general sense of relaxation after the treatment. Skin health is also enhanced as the medicinal herbs nourish and detoxify the skin.
The session begins with the application of warm herbal oil over the body. Once the skin is lightly oiled, the heated herbal poultices are applied using gentle but firm strokes. Each stroke follows the body's energy pathways to stimulate vital points. The poultices are periodically reheated to maintain the ideal temperature. During the massage, heat and herbal extracts are absorbed through the skin, promoting deep tissue relaxation. The procedure typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes.
After the treatment, the body is allowed to rest briefly, followed by a warm water bath to remove any residual oil and herb particles. Elakizhi is often combined with other Ayurvedic treatments and is customized based on the individual's dosha and health condition. It is a highly effective and time-honored therapy for holistic healing.
